The basics are important to understand, in particular because your SMRO might be going after some of this safety study funding while you think they are being vigilant about your rights.

How to File Helmet Complaints - For years, the government could have helped bikers to complain about their helmets but chose not to tell us. Once we found out, we told people. That was on Halloween 2007. We had more complaints on file with the NHTSA, within just a few days than they had in the last 12 years! We also began to spread the word to bikers that OVER 500,000 HELMETS HAVE BEEN RECALLED. These are not accounted for by the US DOT.

Medical Study: Avoid Heavy Helmets - email sent on 10/8/07 to NTSB, NCGA, Governor Easley, NCHP referencing medical study that says avoid heavy helmets.

MRF, NCOM, ABATE Promises to NTSB - Email to Jeff Hennie of MRF, Mark Rosenker of NTSB, and a large distribution list of bikers. The NTSB slammed the door on discussion of biker rights and refused to discuss the NTSB relationship with the NHTSA, in which the NTSB is lobbying for nationwide mandatory universal helmet laws with embedded language of FMVSS 218 compliance. Many State Motorcycle Rights Organizations (SMRO) have become a Motorcycle Safety Organization (MSO) and can no longer be trusted to speak on behalf of biker rights. As a warning to other states, and as rationale for MRF to consider, includes startling examples of how NC biker rights were compromised by NC CBA/ABATE, and their legislative director, Thomas Wasileski, during the 2007 NC legislative session.

NC House Members who ran Unopposed in 2006 - NC House Members who oppressed bikers in 2007 re House Bill 563, which embedded FMVSS 218 into the NC helmet statute.

Heat Stress and Motorcycle Helmets - Research article by jan, edited by Doc. Hyperthermic Brain Damage is extremely prevalent. Helmets prevent heat dissipation. Article was sent as an ALERT to the CDC.

NTSB Case H73-30 - a study by NY DMV showing a 75% increase of serious neck injuries when helmets are worn. NTSB closed the case in 1980, with no explanation or further study. In follow-up with NTSB, in 2007, they said the study was closed perhaps because of the Hurt Study in 1980.

Old Easyriders ABATE article - old article by Grease. Ron McAnnally found this while going through old articles. Shows methods ABATE began trying in the early 1970's. Might have been one of the beginnings of ABATE approach to seek safety rather than use protest methods.
